Trans Vaginal Ultrasound Scan (TVS)
What does the ultrasound involve?
The best way of obtaining a good view of the pelvic organs is by a transvaginal ultrasound scan. During this procedure a scan probe, covered by a condom, is inserted inside the vagina. By gently moving the probe a clear scan image of the womb and ovaries is obtained.
The scan may be performed by a male ultrasonographer with a chaperone present. If you would find this unacceptable and would prefer a female to perform the test, please inform the scan department. If possible, alternative arrangements will be made.
How long does the scan take?
The scan takes no more than a few minutes.
Do I need to have a full bladder for the scan?
It is better to arrive with an empty bladder for this type of scan.
When do I find out the results of the scan?
You will be seen after the scan by the Consultant Gynaecologist who will discuss the results with you and explain whether any further investigations are required.
